My fascination with colour was sparked in the San Francisco Bay Area. I had always been inspired by nature and the unique qualities of light in Northern California. Learning more about colour was a logical next step for me. I was amazed by the dramatic impact that colour had on my perceptions and moods, and the ways that others perceived me, but had yet to fully grasp the meanings or power of colour qualities, nor of harmonies among hues. At this point, I had no inkling that colour would become a lifelong calling for me, and a consuming passion.
After a 15-year career in institutional investment management, I moved to Tokyo in 2001. I immersed myself in ikebana and other art forms, expanding my understanding of natural colour and design harmonies, especially with respect to the refined seasonal aesthetics in Japanese culture.
After six years in Japan, I moved to London in 2007 and continued to develop my expertise in colour design. Much of my colour design work taps into the legacy of Suzanne Caygill, who pioneered the field of personalised colour identification from 1942.
In 2018 I founded OBASHO | My Natural Colours when I realised that I could combine my passions for colour design, business and aesthetics to create practical, cost-effective services that would help people live, work and shop more effectively. The name’s three syllables derive from the Japanese meanings of natural beauty, artisan, and the quality of light.
Up until now, high-calibre, individualised colour design has been a surprisingly under-used resource. I founded OBASHO and My Natural Colours to change that.
